Gateway to Kenya’s wild northern frontier country, the sparsely populated region of Laikipia is dominated by private and community-owned ranches. Here, cattle mingle with protected wildlife, conservation projects abound, Samburu lifestyles endure and ranch guests on safari are free to do as they please. In the arid north, the great Ewaso Nyiro river brings life to the Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo reserves. Wildlife, including leopard, throngs to verdant riverine forests whilst on the plain, cheetah and occasionally rare African hunting dogs can be seen. In stark contrast, Kenya’s little visited reserve, Meru, is a lush greenness that is isolated and unspoilt. Meru is a place of few visitors, great freedom and plentiful game.
