Stretching from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south, West Bengali is not only a great destination in its own right but is also the gateway to Bhutan, the unspoilt 'Land of the Thurnder Dragon'. The capital of West Bengal, Kolkata, has a colonial charm and is famous for its Dutch, French, English and Portuguese styled buildings and historic monuments. The historical remains of Malda, British era buildings and monuments of Kolkata, the Nawab's city Murshidabad, or Rabindranath Tagore's Shanti Niketan gives a picture of the glorious past of the state. The Victoria Memorial, Indian Museum, Howrah Bridge in Kolkata, Hazariduar in Murshidabad are some of the most visited sites in the state.

Sample West Bengal itinerary

GATEWAY TO BHUTAN

Day 1 - 4 Delhi/Paro
Arrive Delhi, overnight at The Imperial. Depart by air to Paro. Opportunity to explore the fascinating local area rich in culture and heritage. Two nights at Amankora or Uma Paro.

Day 4 - 7 Punakha/Gangtey
Enjoy a drive onto Punakha, en route there is an opportunity to visit sights of cultural interest. Spend two nights at Amankora, Punakha. A scenic drive onwards to Gangtey, overnight at Amankora.

Day 7 - 10 Thimpu
Depart by surface to Thimpu, the country's capital. Spend two days exploring the surrounding area, museums, fabulous walking and local markets to be enjoyed. Take time also to relax at Amankora, Thimphu.

Day 10 - 13 Paro/Delhi
Today, return to Paro to enjoy sights or activities yet to be embarked upon, or simply indulge in Amankora or Uma Paro's spas and immediate surroundings before returning by air to Delhi.
