The vibrant ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur is a colourful place where Maharajahs left many legacies. The City Palace houses a magnificent museum of miniature paintings, textiles and weapons. The Jantar Mantar Observatory has a sundial marked in hours and minutes while another locates the signs of the zodiac. The delicately carved windows and balconies of the ‘Palace of the Winds’ enabled ladies of the harem to watch everyday life while on a stunning hillside lies Amber Fort, a complex of opulent palaces with splendid rooms decorated with mirrors, marbles and mosaics. Lying to the north-west is the principality of Samode, a 16th Century fort and palace.
