Antigua the former colonial capital of Central America is an elegant colonial town beautifully surrounded by perfectly shaped volcanoes and patchwork farmlands. For 200 years it was only surpassed in importance throughout the American continent by Mexico City and Lima. Today the exquisite Spanish colonial centre offers elegant 16th and 17th Century architecture, tranquil central squares and convents, chapels and monastries on every corner. Present day whims are also wonderfully catered for with stylish boutique hotels, luxurious shops and superb international cuisine alongside indigenous mayan markets. Antigua really is unique in the world.
