Founded by Alexander the Great as the cultural and political centre of his empire, Alexandria with its sphinxes and obelisks rivalled Rome during Cleopatra’s reign. On the site of the Acropolis and Cleopatra’s library lies Pompey’s Pillar, a thirty metre high pink granite column. The nearby Catacombs of Kom ash-Shuqqafa are the largest known roman burial site in Egypt. Montazah Palace Gardens lead down to the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean which contrast with the desolate beauty of the great sand sea of the Sahara. Further west, set against an awesome backdrop of eroded hills, lies the palm fringed oasis of Siwa where archaeological sites and ruined temples mingle with the isolated Berber community in this tranquil haven.
