Located nearly 2,500 miles west of Chile in the Pacific Ocean, Easter Island is home to 600 giant stone statues of unknown origin and one of the world’s most intriguing isolated and mysterious lands. Spectacular volcanoes, craters, lakes, archaeological and religious sites dot this tiny island that is more Polynesian than South American. The man made ‘Moai’ have gripped the imagination of the world for centuries. Nobody knows how long they have been there, who was responsible for their creation or exactly what they represent. Just as the enigma may continue to bemuse anthropologists and visitors in general the isolation, the warmly hospitable people and the sub-tropical climate make it the ideal place for such a mystery.
