South of the Chilean Lake District the land mass begins to break up to form an archipelago of islands interspersed with glacial fjords and waterways that are only accessible by boat or catamaran. Here amid temperate rainforests it is possible to enjoy trekking or kayaking before unwinding with a massage and a fine meal. Condor, Grey Eagle and guanaco live among the formidable landscapes and imposing wilderness of Torres del Paine National Park. Here the deep azure lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and granite ‘Towers’ makes up some of the most spectacular scenery in South America while nearby Punta Arenas, with its faded, grandiose mansions, is the departure point for flights and cruises to the wilds of Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica.
