Vast horizons frame the flatness of the Makgadikgadi Pans, where early humans first reared up onto two legs from four. The bleached desert is transformed by the rains into a green expanse, thronged with migrating wildebeest and zebra and dense flocks of waterbirds. Safaris are far from the norm here; guides range from PhD scientists to Kalahari bushmen who unveil the palaentological past whilst tracking down unexpectedly diverse desert game on low impact quad bikes. Nearby, Mashatu is one of the largest private reserves in Africa. Unlike in the National Parks, night drives are permitted with viewings of nocturnal predators such as leopard, lynx and wild-cat. Also on offer are horse-back safaris and mountain biking.
