Argentina The Vineyards

Argentina’s first wine producers were the 16th Century Jesuit missionaries who planted vines to make communion wine. By the mid 19th Century French and Italian immigration led to a huge impetus in production until today when Argentina is the world’s fifth largest wine producer with vineyards around Salta, Cafayate, San Juan and the main centre Mendoza. The backdrop here is the impressive foothills of the Andes which also supply the fresh mountain water that together with year round sunshine is essential to some of Argentina’s best wines, for example Malbec, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Many wineries offer tours with generous tastings or even museums which are open year round.
