The north west of Argentina was the first port of call for the Spanish Conquistadores entering from Peru in the 16th Century leaving a colonial history typified by the beautiful city of Salta that dominates the region. There are also fascinating archaeological sites bearing witness to the pre-Hispanic heritage of the country. To the north of Salta is a windswept altiplano with volcanic peaks, impressive saline lakes and condor and flamingo overhead. The area boasts a number of microclimates with desert, sub-tropical cloud forests and where the rivers run in the south west, a gentler climate is ideal for wine production. History and exceptional hospitality produce outstanding estancias in the region.
