Easter Island Holiday

Named on Easter Day 1772, located nearly 4,025 kilometres west of Chile, home to 600 giant stone statues of unknown origin and at one time reduced to a population of just over 100 men, women and children, it is little wonder that Easter Island is one of the world’s most intriguing lands.

Isolated and mysterious, more Polynesian than South American, this tiny volcanic island was virtually lost in the Pacific Ocean until the early 1900s when the Chileans handed it over to sheep-grazing companies. Spectacular volcano dead craters now form freshwater lakes, plus there are archaeological and religious sites and an impressive coastline lined with hundreds of caves providing some of nature’s contributions to this curious island.

By taking an Easter Island holiday one visits one of the bastions of an ancient world as the man-made ‘Moai’ tight-lipped basalt statues, scattered liberally across the island have gripped the imagination of the world for centuries. There is no knowledge of their history of inception, although some suggest that they are the figures of deceased chiefs and of God. A collection of 300 statues in varying stages of completion can be found near a trail which leads to the largest Moai ever built, a 21 metre monolith. Just as the enigma of their manifestation may continue to bemuse anthropologists and visitors in general, the isolation, the warmly hospitable people and the subtropical climate make it the ideal place for such a mystery.

Travel to Easter Island via Santiago and once on the island the accommodation is boutique and quaint. Visitors can tour the island by bicycle and travel around with ease. For those wishing to take full advantage of their stay there are guides available to help with tours.
