Chilean Patagonia Holidays

With around 100 million hectares of impressive scenery a Patagonia holidays takes one to places which are a largely unexplored wilderness.

Just an hours flight further south to Coyhaique, the stunning mountainscape continues as the Chilean land mass begins to break up to form an archipelago of islands, interspersed with glacial fiords and waterways that are only accessible by boat or catamaran. Here amid temperate rainforests in frontier territory it is possible to enjoy trekking or kayaking.

Various cruise companies offer 4 to 7 night cruises sailing the narrow southern channels and fiords of southern Chile. They pass through ancient forests reaching remote villages, hot springs and dramatic glaciers. Some have dedicated fly fishing or adventure tours and include helicopters and zodiac dinghies to get up close. Others concentrate more on viewing the wildlife and magnificent scenery from the comfort of the deck of these floating hotels.

Travelling south from Santiago the Lake District is a profusion of forests, waterfalls and brilliantly coloured lakes set against a stunning volcanic backdrop. Perhaps the most unforgettable of Chilean panoramas lie beyond a belt of dense temperate rainforest in Patagonia. Here, the coast splinters into a trailing archipelago leaving the mainland a labyrinth of fiords and cold blue glaciers. Amid this glorious chaos lies one of Chile’s most spectacular national parks, Torres del Paine. Rising 2,000 metres from the Patagonian steppe, the majestic granite massifs which give the park its name, soar skywards in a geological drama unlike any other. Majestic, brilliantly coloured lakes are woven between snow-capped mountains, volcanic peaks, millennial forests and occasional rapids. Twelve main lakes carved out by ancient advancing glaciers and then filled by melting ice are surrounded by lush forests, valleys with thundering waterfalls and thermal baths fed by volcanoes. Adventure and relaxation go hand in hand in the tranquil Lake District. The options for both are virtually endless, they include walking along paths which weave their way through forested hills, horse riding across the mountains to enjoy spectacular views of the Andes, rafting the Tancura River, one of the most exhilarating rivers in Chile, or fishing on pristine lakes and rivers overflowing with trout, are all equally exciting. It is possible however, just to sit and relax overlooking one of the many beautiful lakes which make this region so desirable.

Condor and flamingo, rare Black-Breasted Hawk, Grey Eagle, puma and guanaco live among the formidable landscapes of Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean southern Patagonia. This unblemished UNESCO biosphere with deep azure lakes, rushing waterfalls and creaking glaciers provide some of the most spectacular scenery in South America. However, it is the vast granite ‘Towers’ jutting into the sky which entices travellers to this imposing wilderness.

From Torres del Paine travel around the Southern Ice Field, the largest ice mass after Antarctica and the Arctic, to cross the Argentine border to get to the Los Glaciars National Park at El Chaltén. Here enjoy trekking into the dramatic surrounding Fitz Roy Mountains and adventure amid glacial peaks, lakes and thick forests. From nearby Punta Arenas, with its faded, grandiose mansions, cruises depart for the wilds of Tierra del Fuego, a heaven for sea trout fishermen and the last stop before Antarctica.
