Literally feet from the Victoria Falls, the Royal Livingstone offers an enormous array of adventure activities combined with a high degree of opulence. Smitten guests are convinced that the hotel should have seven stars rather than five. Whatever the actual rating, the reality is a splendid hotel and its position looking towards the lip of the Falls thrills even the most experienced traveller.
Bedrooms and suites are arranged in two-storey clusters overlooking the thundering majesty of the Falls. With décor inspired by the elegance of a bygone era, this is a deeply civilised retreat. Given the magnificent views, enormous swimming pool, hedonistic spa treatments and excellent cuisine, the temptation to do very little is hard to resist. But then so is the prospect of a river cruise aboard the African Queen or rafting and canoeing on the Zambezi. Helicopter rides over the Falls, tours of local villages, or day safaris to see the elephants of Chobe National Park are also easily arranged. However, it is the peace and solitude of sitting on the teak deck, cocktail in hand, watching the sunset over the Falls, which makes the experience of staying at the Royal Livingstone one to remember.
