Norman Carr spent over 50 years devoting himself to the development of the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia's premier wildlife destination, where four individually designed bush camps and a main safari lodge are now operated in his name. Set at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley in remote areas of the National Park, the Luwi, Nsolo, Kakuli and Mchenja Bush Camps and Kapani Lodge offer a wide range of safari options from more basic walking through to high end luxury, or a combination by moving between camps and the lodge. The Luangwa Valley is an unspoilt location where the concentration and variety of wildlife, both animals and birds, is unequalled. This is wild, untamed Africa at its best.
Kapani Lodge
Kapani is an exclusive lodge situated on the banks of one of the many ox-bow lagoons in the South Luangwa. It accommodates just 20 guests and is open throughout the year. Accommodation is in eight standard suites and two Lagoon Houses. The suites have their own lounges with mini-bars, while the houses are even more spacious with private views and elegant furniture. The house has a lounge and library, a swimming pool and a bar and dining area set on a deck overlooking the Kapani Lagoon. Private dinners can be arranged for guests seeking a little more seclusion.
Luwi Camp
Luwi is a seasonal camp nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon, teaming with hippo and crocodile. Accommodation comprises four grass huts with polished mud floors. Daytime meals are served in the shade of the trees with a view of the grassy plain that normally attracts an abundance of wildlife, while dinner is taken under the stars. Since there are very few roads in this area of the park, the emphasis at Luwi is on walking safaris.
Nsolo Camp
Nsolo Camp is situated on the edge of a watering hole in the shade of a large grove of trees, just a three hour guided walk from Luwi Bushcamp. Accommodation comprises four open-fronted, thatched rooms, built on raised wooden platforms. At night, the canvas curtains can be drawn for added security. The bathrooms are open to the trees and stars above. There is also a bar with a small library of books, an excellent place to relax during the heat of the day and watch the constant activity at the waterhole in front of the camp.
Kakuli Camp
Kakuli is a seasonal camp based on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa Rivers. Five spacious tents each have an open-air bathroom and offer stunning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of river and surrounding grazing lawns. This area of the park is renowned for its great game viewing, most guests combine walking and driving safaris.
Mchenja
Mchenja is set beneath a grove of ebony trees on the banks of the Luangwa River. This camp, comprising five stylishly designed tents with private en-suite bathroom facilities and a small swimming pool, takes luxury in the bush to a level not previously seen in Zambia. It is designed to combine excellently with Norman Carr's more rustic bushcamps - the prefect destination to complete a walking safari or for combining with the even more luxurious Kapini Lodge.
