Prior to 2007 the vast 120,000 hectare Lukula reserve in the southern part of the Selous Game Reserve was off limits to tourism, but has since successfully been turned from hunting to solely photographic safaris.
The reserve is renowned for its large population of elephant, buffalo and associated predators, including one third of all African Wild Dogs. With three rivers meandering through the reserve, hippo, crocodile and fantastic birdlife abound with common sitings of Pel's Fishing owls, Wattled crane, and Palmnut vulture among the 350 recorded species. In addition to the floodplains, habitats include riverine forest, savanna, forested hills and rocky ridges, making a stay at Lukula Selous as much about the diversity of scenery and the experience as it is about the wildlife.
The camp itself is a non-permanent, luxury, tented camp sleeping just 8 guests, with a light footprint on the banks of the Luwego River. Each of the spacious tents is furnished with Campaign furniture and sumptuous fabrics, with open-air bathrooms, brass fittings, bucket showers, flush toilets and hot water.
From 2010 the Lukula reserve can also be visited on a non-exclusive use basis, making a stay here far more affordable for couples. 3 and 4 nights stays start at just £550 per person per night fully inclusive, including park fees.
Lukula's success will lead to other hunting concessions taking notice with the hope that they too will shoot animals only through a long camera lens and not through the sights of a rifle.
