Remote in the true sense of the word, Mahale lies on the distant shores of Lake Tanganyika. Fifty miles from the nearest road, it is accessible only by private plane and Arab dhow. While only the intrepid are likely to make the journey, the rewards are manifold. Rising from a perfect white beach, the forested mountains are populated by a thousand or more chimpanzees. The clear waters of the lake and palm-fringed sands provide opportunities for relaxing afternoons spent fishing, swimming and snorkelling. Your home at Greystoke Mahale is in exotic wooden bandas looking out across the beach, with interiors fashioned from seasoned dhow timber. The six-suites are open-fronted, with adjoining bathrooms, and upstairs chill-out decks. The focal point however of Greystoke is the bar and dining area rising up from the sand and loosely modelled on traditional Tongwe architecture a stunning compliment to the surrounding vista.
Trekking through the forest over brooks, under waterfalls and around vine draped fig trees, admiring the monkeys and butterflies and waiting for the tell-tale sounds of chimpanzees is sheer bliss. Sitting right among the habituated chimpanzees and watching their playful antics and social interaction renders every minute of this incredible experience at Greystoke Mahale a once in a lifetime thrill.
