The River House, by Taru Villas

Enjoying an idyllic setting on a wildlife-filled estuary of the Madhu River, near the town of Balapitiya on the island's south-west coast, the five suite River House was the first Sri Lankan owned hotel to feature in Condé Nast Traveller’s exclusive annual ‘hottest’ new hotels in the world list and it is obvious why.

Occupying seven acres of lush woodland, the luxurious but homely accommodation is accessible only by boat or by quaint dirt track. Created by top Sri Lankan designer Taru, the rooms are decorated with a blend of contemporary and antique furnishings and sport four-poster beds, DVD players, big private verandas, and polished-concrete bathrooms with freestanding tubs and outdoor showers.

Meals are served in an open-air pavilion on the edge of the jungle, best observed aboard the resort's river cruiser or in your own canoe. To cool off, take a dip in the spectacular tree lined pool or have an in-suite massage at the hands of a professional therapist. The resort's three-wheel Tuk-Tuk taxi can also take you to Balapitiya's markets devil & Kandyan dance performances and antiques shops as well as to local beaches.

Although The River House is the perfect base from which to explore Southern Sri Lanka, with facilities this good it is also difficult to leave.
