Set on the edge of the village of Tangalle, in southern Sri Lanka, in a mature coconut grove overlooking a cresecent shaped bay; Amanwella's name literally translates to 'peaceful beach'. Tranquillity certainly is a theme here - a quiet well-stocked library, peaceful spa treatments and private plunge pools and terraces for each of the thirty hillside-based suites all contribute to the serenity.
Inspired by works of Sri Lanka's most notable modern architect, Geoffrey Bawa, Suites are located high on the hillside while Ocean Suites occupy the lower slopes, all boasting wonderful views over the sea. In addition, some ocean pool suites have adjoining terraces making them ideal for families.
In the heart of the resort, immaculate architecture leads down to a huge infinity swimming pool, overlooked by two sun terraces and the external dining area of the main restaurant which serves Asian and Mediterranean fare with an emphasis on fresh local seafood. Alternatively, the nearby Beach Club, an open pavilion ideal for informal or private dining, is located in a coconut grove, just metres from the sea.
To tempt you away from the resort, Bundala and Uda Walawe National Parks, where you may see elephant and spotted deer, are less than two hours' drive away while Mulgirigalla Rock Temple, a monastic site on an isolated rock which soars out of the surrounding forest may be your cup of Sri Lankan Tea.
