The charming Amangalla lies within the walls of the Fort at Galle, historically a significant trading port for Chinese, Persian, Arab and Indian traders, and today a protected UNESCO World Heritage site.
Accommodation, retaining many colonial features but with a contemporary Aman twist, ranges from ground floor rooms that enjoy views over the gardens or Great Church, through to vast suites, some of which overlook ramparts of the Fort itself. The Garden House, a two storey residence decorated with antiques, featuring a pantry and a private terrace and butler, is the icing on the cake.
Enjoy traditional Sri Lankan curry served with antique silverware in The Dining Room or take a swim in the magnificent swimming pool, bordered by shaded sun beds. Alternatively, relax in the well-stocked library or in the spa, which offers a hydrotherapy pool, two saunas, two steam rooms, yoga and meditation pavilion and two plunge pools as well as a range of delectable treatments.
A leisurely walk will take you past the Dutch church, boutiques, lighthouse, sea walls and ramparts. Visit the mosque and meander down streets leading to temples surrounded by frangipani trees and after a day's exploration, sit on the veranda, enjoy a tall drink, watch the world go by and mull over Galle's 400 years of rich and exotic history.
