Ant's Nest in South Africa's Waterberg, a little south of the Botswanan border, is the unique bush homestead of Ant and Tessa Baber.
The luxurious en-suite rooms, booked on either an exclusive use lodge or by room, accommodates a maximum of only 12 guests, and suitable for couples, groups or families. The inviting interiors fashioned from local timbers give an easy going feel. Nestled in the landscaped gardens, the swimming pool blends naturally into the surroundings, while there is a also a wonderful thatched covered chill-out spot furnished with large sofa beds for those in need of a siesta or respite from the sun.
Ant's mission is to share his knowledge of the bush, which can be explored by 4x4 vehicle, on foot or on horseback allowing you to get really close to game, including the famous white rhino. Children will find themselves helping with a conservation project or visiting a local game auction and coming home with a giraffe in the trailer.
At Ant's Nest, like their sister property Ant's Hill, there are some 30 horses catering to every ability and age where guests are taken out into the reserve in ability groups of no more than six riders. As the horses live out in the reserve and graze close to rhino and antelope, horseback safaris really allow you to get much closer to the game than otherwise possible in a vehicle or on foot.
Ant has been known to say 'once you get the sand of the Waterberg in your shoes, you have to come back' as he waves his guests off and many do decide to do just that.
