Previously uninhabited for 30 years, North Island is a unique private sanctuary where top end luxury is woven around an intensive rehabilitation programme to reintroduce critically endangered Seychelles species to the area. The island has retained its incredible natural beauty as a result of the programme. The owners of North Island have committed themselves to restoring the ecology partly funded by sensitive, small-scale ecotourism. Building a lodge that captures the spirit of the island in a style as natural as the trees, beaches and rocks was part of the plan.
The architects, who designed the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Mombo and Jao Camps in Africa, also spent months on the island, getting to know its essence and then creating one of the world's most heavenly retreats which was voted within the top five resorts in the world by Condé Nast Traveller.
Just 11 secluded villas, ten of which are an incredible 450 square metres and one magnificent 'Villa North Island' which is 650 square metres, are handcrafted from wood, local stone and glass. The huge villas include an inviting sitting and dining area that leads onto an expansive wooden deck with a private plunge pool and steps leading directly to the beach. An outdoor sala beckons those who wish to while away the afternoon with a siesta amidst the swaying palm trees. A luxuriously proportioned bedroom has an en suite bathroom with a sunken marble bath and outside shower. There is also an indoor living room which can be used as a second bedroom for children.
Dining on North Island is a feast of natural flavours that can be enjoyed either in one's villa or in the shady dining area overlooking the white sandy beach. Alternatively, guests may choose to have a romantic champagne beach picnic on a secluded spot around the island.
The holistic spa and modern equipped gym are located on a promontory with uninterrupted views of the ocean, while a whole host of water sports that include PADI reef and wall diving will entertain guests to their heart's content. Part of the experience is the fabulous birding and guided walks with the resident ecologist that will inspire guests with enthusiasm for the project and the concept of sustainability in this responsible and extraordinary paradise.
