IIf you are really looking to get away from the stresses of modern life, Bird Island, a private and eco-friendly nature reserve, is the perfect place for you. Reached via a 30 minute flight from Mahé, this 170 acre coral cay is an obvious magnet for ornithologists being home to at least 20 different species of birds, including millions of sooty terns. That's not all it has to offer as the swimming and snorkelling off Bird Island is magical, and there is a huge variety of other water sports to enjoy as well as game fishing and tennis. In terms of other wildlife, Esmeralda, an unfortunate name for a male tortoise and the world's largest, lives here, as do scores of hawksbill and green turtles. Nature tours are organised in glass bottomed boats three times a week so you can see the full spectrum of sea life as well.
The lodge is the island's only accommodation, manned by extremely hospitable staff but with no gimmicks. If you can't live without TV or a spa, then this is probably not the place for you. Its 24 bungalows, built and furnished with natural materials, are spacious with separate lounge areas and patios with sea views. Within the main pavilion, the restaurant provides delicious buffet-style Creole lunches and European-style dinners, while the informal lounge area is a place to relax and reflect on your time in paradise.
