Situated just three hours drive away from Kigali and an hour from Parc National des Volcans, Virunga Lodge is run by one of the top gorilla safari companies in the world. Given this connection, it is no surprise that the accommodation is set in an area teaming with Mountain Gorillas. In the Parc National des Volcans where conservationist Dian Fossey worked, there are four habituated gorilla families.
Virunga Lodge comprises eight large, private bandas set into the hillside with verandas providing the most incredible 360 degree views of the Virunga volcanoes and Lakes Ruhondo and Bulera. The same stunning views are available from the lounge, bar and dining room. The accommodation provides a high level of comfort whilst at the same time taking into consideration the surrounding environment. There is no running water but there are wonderful hot bush showers to revive you after your gorilla tracking.
Aside from gorilla tracking, clients can climb the Visoke or Karisimbi volcanoes, visit the remains of the Karisoke Centre which Dian Fossey set up, or go for gentle strolls around the picturesque villages near the lakes.
