Across the Hajar Mountains from the United Arab Emirates lies the Sultanate of Oman, an area best visited during the northern European winter.
A vast desert plain covers most of central Oman but its main cities are located across the south and north coasts, surrounded by mountain ranges. Its northern capital, Muscat, described as "Arabia's jewel" is a magnificent blend of old and new set against the stunning backdrop of the Jebel Akdhar mountains, with the Arabian Sea lapping at its shores. Forts, castles, mosques, minarets and towers dot the landscape of Old Muscat and the old souk of Muttrah is an ideal spot to shop, while Greater Muscat boasts archaeological sites, museums and world-class hotels. The city is also so lush with vegetation that it somehow defies being classified as desert country.
With its diverse terrain, Oman is also an outdoor enthusiast's dream come true, with everything on offer from scuba diving, sunset cruises, game fishing and turtle watching, to rock climbing, horse riding and camel racing. Alternatively, just relax in the eternal sunshine on the beach or by the pool. Being so different to Dubai, Oman makes an ideal second destination for a two-centre holiday with its UAE neighbour. It is also a perfect destination all on its own.
