Cocoa Island

A mere 40 minutes by speedboat from Malé Airport, Cocoa Island is a member of the COMO Hotels and Resorts portfolio which also includes The Metropolitan in London and Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos. With such impressive credentials, it is hardly surprising that Cocoa Island is as perfect as it appears.

A tiny sliver of land surrounded on one side by one of the best dive sites in the Maldives and on the other by aquamarine shallows, Cocoa Island looks to be the ultimate desert island retreat. Fortunately, the levels of accommodation, comfort and cuisine are about as far removed from Robinson Crusoe style living as it is possible to get. The dhoni suites and dhoni loft suites, replicas of local fishing vessels, are moored along a sun-bleached wooden boardwalk. These feature expansive, light-filled bedrooms and living areas which lead to a private sundeck with direct access to the Indian Ocean. Ten loft villas, awash with natural light flooding through the vast windows on all sides, also boast outdoor showers and uninterrupted views. One bedroom and two bedroom over water villas offer total privacy and seclusion. Decorated in a clean, contemporary style, their inspiration is drawn from southern Indian and colonial furniture, using local cottons and splashes of traditional colour and also featuring modern amenities such as CD and DVD players, mini bars, air-conditioning and complimentary WiFi both in-room and in the main areas of the resort.

Cocoa Island is a perfect place for contemplation and rejuvenation. Three massage pavilions enjoy peaceful views across the ocean and are available for Ayurvedic treatments, while complimentary daily yoga classes and a hydrotherapy pool are also on offer. The renowned cuisine is taken to extraordinary levels in the Ufaa restaurant, combining locally caught seafood with the heady spices of Sri Lanka and Kerala, while the policy of no set times for meals allows guests to start and end the day at their leisure. Traditional Maldivian swings with soft pillows allow guests to emulate the local pastime of rocking languidly in the shade. For the more active, an on-site dive centre ensures guests can enjoy the extensive marine life, while snorkelling equipment, canoes, windsurfers and a gymnasium are also available.
