With its blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs, and its mix of 21st century western industrialism and unadulterated nature at its best, Malaysia is an amazing place to visit.
In the wealthy capital, Kuala Lumpur, huge skyscrapers sit next to remnants of traditional Malay villages. In Malaysia's smaller towns such as Terengganu, you will find a more typical mix of colonial architecture, amazing temples and mosques and sunny beaches, all packaged up with an intrinsically Chinese, Indian and Malay flavour.
In contrast, the Cameron Highlands, in the centre of Peninsular, a series of hill stations at high altitudes and the centre of Malaysia's tea industry, couldn't be more rural and is a great escape from the heat of the city or the superb beaches.
The variety of wildlife in the central virgin rainforest of Langkawi, with monkey, hornbill and flying fox on view is amazing, while the underwater world of Pangkor is not to be missed, with its immense coral reefs and vast variety of marine life including large bump head parrot fish, schooling barracuda and jack swimming around World War 2 shipwrecks.
Malaysia is one of the few countries where old and new sit comfortably side by side, providing an eclectic mixture of sights, cultures and atmospheres.
