Situated on the immediate outskirts of the small mountain village of Joffreville, the colonial Domaine de Fontenay is set in its own 740 acre private nature reserve which in turn is home to some 45 recorded species of birds, boa constrictors, a giant tortoise called Galileo, colonies of Sandford’s Brown lemur and numerous other endemic species. With its central northern location, it also has easy access all the main tourist spots, such as Montagne d'Ambre National Park, Red Tsingy, Ankarana Special Reserve and Montagne des Francais.
Founded as a retreat for French officers in the early 20th century, Le Domaine de Fontenay is now a relaxed, nine-bedroomed hotel set whose mountain side location 2,500 feet above sea level provides a welcome retreat from the sultriness of the Diego-Suarez coast, which is only an hour’s drive away.
The hotel's décor reflects its history: the honeymoon suite's marble bath was salvaged from the captain's quarters of a 19th century French corvette, the restaurant's stone fireplace bears the official stamp of French architect Gustave Eiffel, and there’s a French billiards room. The wall-mounted car-stereos in the bedrooms are hardly colonial but they indicate the delightful eccentricity of this special little hotel.
