High on a cliff in the Northern Frontier District overlooking a deep river gorge, Sabuk is a striking lodge set in one of Africa's last real wilderness areas. Vast and varied this hilly land dotted with acacia bushes, patches of forest and striped with lush river valleys is host to a cornucopia of game that changes with the seasons.
With just five secluded cottages fashioned from the landscape and featuring twisted wood and stone boulders as part of the decor, Sabuk has a fairytale atmosphere. Each cottage is open-fronted and even the sunken stone baths have amazing views. Children are welcome and early meal times, huge day beds with cushions for siestas are geared to making life easy for families. Night and day game drives, horse riding, lazy hours spent by the river and bush breakfasts are tailored to suit individual requirements.
However, it is the camel safaris led by Samburu guides which are the highlight of Sabuk. The local tribesmen who are immensely welcoming are ever willing to share their bush craft, tracking skills and knowledge of the indigenous flora and fauna. Overnight camel treks into the wilderness with supper on a sandy river bank and followed by a tranquil sleep under the stars, is a heart warming experience not to be missed.
