Imagine a camp set right in the heart of some of the greatest predator country of Africa. This is the Mara Plains Camp, located on the northern border of the Masai Mara National Reserve in the 12,200 hectare Olare Orok Conservancy, which boasts the region’s lowest vehicle density, with no minibuses and only one guest room per 284 hectares. Rarely a night passes without lion roaring nearby, while leopard are regularly found wandering through the camp and cheetah have established territories on the savannah nearby. One of just three camps in the concession, Mara Plains is a small, personal, high quality, seven room camp. The uniquely designed canvas rooms sit on individual elevated platforms commanding sweeping views from three sides. The camp has a wonderfully secluded location hidden among the trees on the banks of the Ntiakatek River. Once over the swing bridge across the river and under the cool shade of the trees, there is a lovely open grass area leading up to the camp. The decor is warm and inviting with two lounges, one with a small library and writing area, a main dining room with a grand wood table and magnificent chandelier hosts breakfast and occasional dinners, when not dining under the stars. Mara Plains offers an unrivalled game viewing experience, the specially designed open vehicles have the largest traversing area of any camp in the greater Masai Mara and the Swarovski Optik field binoculars in each tent will help bring the wildlife even closer.
