Gritti Palace is a much loved and long standing favourite. Built in 1525 as the residence of Venetian Doge, Andrea Gritti, this famously opulent hotel lies in one of Venice's prime positions, overlooking the Grand Canal with its blue striped mooring poles, jaunty gondoliers and the magnificent Santa Maria della Salute across the water.
Despite becoming a hotel in the early 1900s, Gritti Palace retains the atmosphere of a private aristocratic residence. The guest list reads like 'Who's Who' and the decor is ornate on a grand scale. Of the 91 rooms and suites decorated in voluptuous Venetian style with marble bathrooms, antique furniture, vast brocade-draped beds and soaring ceilings, the best have stunning views of the Grand Canal.
Bellavista Terrace, the canal side terrace of the Club del Doge restaurant is one of Venice's legendary venues. Enjoying drinks or dinner against a backdrop of the Grand Canal is one of life's more sublime experiences while cocktails in the green marble Bar Longhi are famed. The staff are charming and the front desk is one of the most helpful in Venice.
