Situated in Matera, Basilicata, Albergo Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita is one of the only hotels in the world with natural extravagance based within prehistoric caves. This new and unique boutique hotel and conservation project is set in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering unspoilt views over the canyon's Byzantine cave churches, blending the contemporary with the ancient.
The 9000 year old city of Matera represents the most spectacular and well-preserved example of a town where thousands of caves have been used for centuries as dwellings, churches and palaces. Matera is a unique place which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993 and blends perfectly into the natural environment. It has been used as a set for countless films.
Sassi di Matera is a perfect vantage point from which to organize unforgettable tours and exciting visits, exploring the Palaeolithic settlements, cave churches & ancient frescoes, birdwatching, horseriding & hiking in the magnificent canyon and sampling the delicious local food and wines in the "Cripta della Civita". This is a spectacular new destination between the Amalfi Coast and Puglia (Apulia)!
The hotel has 18 rooms and was carved along the lanes climbing to the town of Matera. The biggest rooms measure up to 160 square meters. They have all been restored respecting the original shape and materials. From their room, guests can contemplate the extraordinary landscape of the Gravina district, a spectacular canyon in a natural park.
