Indonesia

The vibrant spice and mining industries, combined with the sheer beauty of the Indonesian archipelago, has attracted hundreds of ethnic groups to make their mark here over the centuries. Arabic, Chinese, Malay and European influences are evident in everything from its ornate temples to its cuisine, as is the strong spirituality afforded by a range of religions including Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism.

Indonesia's tropical climate and location between continental plates has resulted in a landscape is just as varied, stunning beaches and endless reefs nestle below mountains and volcanoes and alongside rainforests.

Bali, one of the smallest islands in the archipelago, has a stunning landscape centering on the volcanic Gunung Batur, a fabulous place from which to view the sunset or surrounding countryside, including locals working in the rice fields. For a quieter holiday and an even more varied landscape, choose the less developed Lombok. The islands' stunning beaches and reefs offer diving, snorkelling, as well as excellent surf spots. The island of Moyo is the starting point for a Komodo Dragon experience aboard a private boat and Java is home to the Borobudur Temple, the largest monument in the southern hemisphere.

Wherever you go on this, the largest archipelago in the world, it is clear to see why it has attracted so many settlers and visitors over the years.
