Ecuador & Galapagos

Ecuador is a thumbnail version of all that renders the Andean countries of Latin America remarkable. Small enough to put the majority of attractions within easy reach of the impressive capital and yet diverse enough to beguile the most jaded of tastes. Fine colonial towns and vibrant Indian markets are set in landscapes dominated by the great Andean cordillera, which divides the coast from the steaming Amazonian rainforest inland.

Quito, the capital, basks in a spring-like climate and is surrounded by fairytale mountains. Its beautifully preserved colonial centre is now a UNESCO world heritage site. Accessibility is the keyword in Ecuador and only a few hours' drive north and south lie many of the country's famed market towns, bustling with native Ecuadorians wearing colourful traditional clothes and selling wonderful woven goods and handicrafts. Colonial haciendas are the perfect place to stay here and apart from offering guests elegant living and a rare insight into rural life, trekking, riding and bird watching in the glorious highlands are just some of the many local activities.

In stark contrast to the mountain provinces is the jungle interior. More easily reached than in any other Latin American country, Ecuador's rainforest offers a profusion of flora and fauna and is served by excellent lodges in keeping with sound principles of eco-tourism.

No journey to Ecuador would be complete, however, without a visit to the Galapagos Islands. The cradle of Darwin's theories, the islands are a wildlife paradise; a living record of evolution and an extraordinary life enhancing experience.
