For those yearning for the utterly remote this is the perfect option. For nearly 3,000 kilometers there are no cities or towns in any direction and the nearest habitation is at the South Pole. Union Glacier camp lies in the spectacular and remote southern Ellsworth Mountains, deep in Antarctica's heartland. The camp is only accessible by charter aircraft, an almost 5 hour flight from the southern tip of Chile. The wheeled aircraft lands on a naturally occurring ice runway on the Union Glacier, where guests take their first steps in Antarctica. Specially adapted vehicles take guests the eight kilometer ride to the camp where the welcoming cluster ofcolourfultents bustle with activity. Beyond there is an endless expanse of snow, ice, rock and sky. This is a true outpost on the polar plateau and the only facility of its kind in Antarctica. It is a remote airfield, an expedition base camp, an efficient logistics and communications hub, and a wilderness 'lodge'. While at base camp guests sleep in spacious, double walled tents. At the heart of the camp is the main dining tent serving as a gathering place. Self-sufficient, functional andcosy, with 24 hours of sunshine in the summer months, Union Glacier camp is like no other place on Earth.
