The territory of what is now Zambia was known as Northern Rhodesia from 1911. It was renamed to Zambia on the occasion of its independence, in 1964, the new name being derived from the Zambezi River. Referred to as the real Africa by those in the know, Zambia is one of the continent’s most beautiful and unspoilt African safari destinations. It is home to an exceptional variety of wildlife, superb birdlife and an array of accommodation ranging from award winning luxury lodges to simple mobile tented camps.

Zambia has the unusual privilege to have borders with eight countries and it covers a land area approximately three times that of the United Kingdom. Within this country there have been tremendous feats of engineering; building the bridge across the Zambezi at the Victoria Falls in 1905, railway line construction across the centre of Africa from Livingstone to Dar es Salaam, the development of the Copperbelt, one of the world’s richest copper deposits and of course the building of the Kariba Dam, one of Africa’s largest dams.  Often known as the ‘wild heart of Africa’, Zambia is renowned as the home of the walking safari, which was pioneered in the 1950s in the South Luangwa National Park. It is still the ultimate walking destination, with some of the best guides in Africa, coupled with spectacular scenery and excellent sightings.  Zambia offers not only excellent safari opportunities but also access to the thrills of Victoria Falls.
