Traditionally thought of as a destination for US jet-setters, the Bahamas is not somewhere that one would automatically choose if you were looking for luxury Caribbean charm. Yet there are still some fantastic opportunities to escape the package-tour madness and see an authentic slice of West Indian life.

The Family Islands, once named the Out Islands because they are the most remote in the Bahamas archipelago combine a tranquil charm with a wealth of things to do.

Andros is the largest and least explored of the Family Islands. It has the world’s third largest barrier reef, which is over 225 kilometres long and offers amazing, unspoilt snorkelling opportunities. Additionally, Andros abounds in Blue Holes, water-filled, circular pits that open to underground and submarine caves, the scene of some of the deepest underwater explorations in the world and a must for keen divers. Anglers will also delight in the fact that it is the bonefish capital of the world.

If the preference is for nature, explore the vast rainforest area, admire the 50 or more species of orchids that grow in the swampland or watch the 200 different birds that are native to the island.

For its combination of style, sea and sport, with a heavy dash of nature and tranquillity, Andros is definitely the luxury resort of choice in the Bahamas. The hotels verge on the boutique and offer the ultimate in luxury surrounds.
